Pharping · Nepal

People have come here to sit still for a thousand years.

A garden retreat house on the forested slopes of Pharping. Sixteen rooms, a hall for practice, mornings in the clouds, and nowhere you have to be.

Pharping and its monasteries in the valley below forested hills

About us

A quiet house in an old place of practice.

By tradition, Guru Rinpoche meditated in the caves above Pharping in the eighth century, and people have been coming here to sit still ever since. Monasteries line the hillside, and pilgrims walk the same paths every morning.

You don't need to follow any tradition to feel it. We keep a garden house in the middle of it all: sixteen rooms, a hall, a kitchen and two hectares of lawns and fruit trees. Come for a few quiet days, a longer retreat, or with your own group.

Around Pharping

Monasteries, caves and forest all around the house.

Pharping is one of the great pilgrimage places of the Himalaya. Most of what makes it special starts at our gate.

The golden statue

A giant golden statue of Guru Rinpoche sits on the hillside beside us. You can see it from almost every corner of the grounds, from the pool to the rooftop.

Four monasteries

Mahaguru Monastery is a minute from our gate. Azom, Rigon Tashi Choeling and the Samye Memorial Nunnery are all within a quarter of an hour on foot.

Two sacred caves

Yeshe Tsogyal and Mandarava

Two meditation caves named after Guru Rinpoche's great women disciples, both on our hillside. Yeshe Tsogyal Cave is 13 minutes on foot. Mandarava Cave is 20, with a short climb at the end.

Forest and wildlife

The forest begins where the garden ends. Mornings bring birdsong and drifting cloud, and if you walk quietly you may meet some of the animals that live in the hills.

Hiking in the hills

Trails climb from the valley into the forested ridges, from an easy morning loop to a full day up Champadevi. We can arrange a local guide.

On foot from our gate

Six places of practice within twenty minutes' walk, at an easy pace. Enough for one unhurried morning.
